• Jonathan Ferguson – Introduction to the SAGIC Honours Roll 2017

Born in Jarrow in the north of England in 1962, one of four children, the recipient of this year’s SAGIC Honours Roll travelled the world extensively as a child, living in cities like Hong Kong and Ormskirk in West Lancashire, before his family settled in Johannesburg.

After matriculating from Hyde Park High School in 1980, he joined Eskom and, through them, studied Horticulture at a Technikon, now known as the Durban University of Technology.  He qualified his National Horticulture Diploma with honours and then worked at various Eskom power stations until the end of 1984, when he married, and will celebrate their 33rd anniversary this year.

After his time at Eskom, he joined a nursery on the East Rand to head up their landscape contracting division at the beginning of 1985 and then later joined one of the leading Landscaping Companies in the country in 1987.

He was appointed as the head of the landscape contracting division of this company and this year he celebrates 30 years of unbroken service, where one can safely say he has seen it all and has been through many changes and many different seasons, personally and professionally.

Over the years, he has done world class Landscape installations locally and in far off exotic locations like the Indian Ocean islands, West and North Africa.

Our recipient is not only a landscaper.

Family comes first. He and his wife have raised two wonderful children and their family unit has recently grown with the addition of two beautiful grandchildren.

Our recipient believes strongly in investing in future generations and has recently started giving lectures at the Tshwane University of Technology. He is passionate about mentoring the next generation of his profession.

His involvement in the development of the new Professional Landscape Manager registration process within the South African Council for the Landscape Architectural Profession has been vital to the success of this new opportunity to be recognised as a professional individual in our industry.

His wife is being quoted as saying that: “Having been married to a landscaper for 33 years I have experienced first-hand his deep love for and commitment to the industry, and his desire to see it recognised professionally and grow and develop.”

It is in recognition of this deep passion that SAGIC would like to honour Jonathan Ferguson for his contribution to the South African Green Industry.
